Think Stretch

To all parents of upcoming Third and Fourth Grade Students,

I hope that this letter finds you happy and healthy. I trust that your upcoming third or fourth grade student is anticipating a great summer. I am writing to reinforce the need to continue practicing educational skills. At St. John the Evangelist we employ the Summer Think Stretch program for all students entering grades K-4. This booklet provides a review of skills learned in the areas of math, reading, and writing in the previous grade. It is expected that all students participate in this program. Therefore, a grade in each of the three  academic areas for the completion of the sections. Please have your child focus on attention to details. All entries should be in your child’s writing. Please do not write for them. They will not receive credit if you write for them. Please encourage your child to complete each page/activity according to the directions. For instance, the reading section asks for both the title and the genre (fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, etc). Each writing section provides two pages (front and back). At this level they should be writing more than a sentence or two.  They should be sure to completely answer the prompts they choose. If given a choice of prompts, they need only select one and work on it to the best of their ability. They should use proper rules for capitalization and punctuation. All books must be turned in to me by Friday August 30, 2019.

If by chance, you have not purchased a Think Stretch booklet, they are available in the office. I would highly recommend that time be spent each week on these activities. It really makes a difference in readiness for school in August.

Please see the attached grading rubric for third grade students for the Think Stretch booklet.
